New Year – a time of vibrant red decorations, red
clothing and red packets! This year, CHIJ celebrated this
festival with a mass, celebrated by our school chaplain,
Father Michael Sitaram, and following that, performances
put up by our own students and even teachers!
The
4/1 and 4/2 classes had organized the 2007 Chinese New
Year mass. This was complemented (as usual) by Father
Michael’s bundle of jokes, which he used at every
possible occasion and we laughed along. However, there
is no denying that his jokes always come with hidden
meanings. Oranges were blessed during mass, and after
the closing hymn the concert began, starting off with
a performance by the CLDDS girls entitled “Super
Animal”. Despite a small technical problem in
the beginning, the students greatly enjoyed the performance,
cheering all the way.
Then,
there was an impressive number on the drums by our teachers,
and something rather unexpected – “Fear
Factor, CHIJ style” – hosted by Ms. Sharon
Tan and Mr. Fausta Tan, consisting of musical chairs
and a bucket containing a very nasty concoction. It
is a pleasure to say that one of our students triumphed
over the teachers as the last girl sitting – Penny
Ng of Secondary 3/3!
The
concert then proceeded with the items performed by the
four houses – Blue House emerged victorious, despite
their rather short performance. The concert was rounded
off with prize-giving for the lower and upper secondary
class-decorating contest, and the students were sent
back to class for spring cleaning.
All
in all, the students heartily enjoyed themselves during
the celebrations, and went home with smiles on their
faces, eagerly waiting for Chinese New Year to begin.
